The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, on Tuesday in Abuja cautioned road users against over-speeding during the holiday periods.

He said the number of accidents recorded on highways was alarming.

He cautioned road users against exceeding the 100km speed limit.

He said: “As we enter the peak of the yuletide season, there will be a lot of movement of goods, vehicles and persons on the highways.

“As the number of roads we complete increases, we are also seeing increasing speeding and accidents.

“With accidents, the casualties break our heart, I am going to appeal to Nigerians that the maximum speed on a federal highway is 100 kilometres, it is not the minimum but maximum.”

“We should not drive 101 kilometres on the road. What it does when the speed is maintained is that when there is a trouble or problem, you are better able to bring the vehicle under control.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps has mobilized over 30,000 operatives from all field commands and its headquarters to commence end of the year special patrol tagged ‘Operation Zero Tolerance to Road Traffic Crashes’ to ensure the safety of road users during the yuletide.

It also equally set up 15 traffic control camps, 27 help areas and 46 ambulance points along critical routes across the nation to complement operational and public education efforts during the season.

Public Education Officer, FRSC, Bisi Kazeem, in a statement, listed the routes as Akwanga-Lafiya-Makurdi, Jos-Bauchi-Gombe, Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Birnin Kebbi corridor, Katsina-Kano-Wudil-Dutse-Azare-Potiskum corridor, Kaduna-Saminaka-Jos corridor, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor, Okene-Ogori-Isua-Owo corridor, Makurdi-Otukpo-Obollo Afor-9th Mile corridor, Asaba-Abraka-Ughelli-Warri corridor, Ibadan-Ogere-Sagamu corridor, Sagamu-Mowe-Lagos corridor.
