Neighbourhood youths aided Operation Apakwu, a security outfit formed by Governor Ben Ayade, to rescue an 83-year-old landlord early Tuesday morning.The victim, a traditional ruler in Calabar South Local Government Area of the state, HRH Sylvester Bassey Iyamba, was kidnapped by gunmen who cordoned off his residence on Idang Street by Ambo Street at about 8 pm on Monday.A community leader in the area, Chief Bassey Ekpenyong, said the monarch was rescued yesterday morning.“He was rescued yesterday when our youths and the security operatives invaded the nearby creek where the gunmen had taken him Monday night.“The gunmen could not ferry him across the water and could also not hide him in the creek because our boys usually combed the entire creek for their livelihood.“We were told that one of them was shot in the leg and his colleagues took him away and abandoned the kidnapped monarch.”The Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, represented by her assistant, Igre Ewa, confirmed the incident.She said, “A joint team of the Operation Akpakwu rescued him this morning with the cooperation of the local youths.”
