A group of youths from Dukawa, Darma, Zangon Barebari and Sharifai communities of Kano Municipal Local Government has begun construction of drainage through voluntary contribution of resources with a view to addressing flooding and other health challenges in the areas.
According to the leader of the group, Malam Mubarak Abba, the youths in the affected communities decided to come up with the initiative following the trauma residents of the areas experienced during the last rainy season.
He said despite their several pleas to authorities concerned to address the problem, nothing was done to alleviate their suffering.
“The youths in these areas have found it necessary to help themselves after they realised that if they don’t do it, nobody will do it for them. Therefore, we mobilised ourselves and started a voluntary contribution of any amount of money one can give, as well as voluntary engagement of our able youths from the affected communities to construct drainage channels that linked all these communities. We have gone far, the youths are committed in ensuring that we succeed,” he said.
It was also gathered that seeing the impact of the initiative, wealthy individuals of the affected communities have also started supporting the project.
According to one of the youths, Auwal Bello Sharifai, the volunteers were committed to completing the project with the little contribution from the public which was serving as motivation.
