Youth Games: FG threatens to fine, suspend age cheat states

Any state caught encouraging age cheating at the oncoming National Youth Games (NYG) will be fined and suspended, the federal government has threatened.

While addressing a press conference yesterday, Dr Ademola Are, Director of Grassroots sports development at the Federal Ministry of youth and sports, said the government will be strict in the screening of athletes for the Games.

“Any state that utilize over aged athletes will be sanctioned while the athletes will be sent back home.

“We are inviting external bodies to do the screening and we are going to screen them sport by sport.

“As punishment, the affected states will pay fine starting from N2.5 million while the coach and athlete will be sanctioned,” he said.

Are, who lamented that age cheating was responsible for the dwindling fortunes of sports in Nigeria, noted that technological inputs will be deployed when necessary during screening.

He said the federal government was determined to ensure that new talents are discovered and groomed to represent the country at international competitions.

The 4th edition of the NYG will hold at the University of Ilorin sports complex between 7th and 17th of September, 2018.

He said all the states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory will participate in the Games with no fewer than 4000 athletes and officials expected.

Only athletes of15 years old and below will be eligible to participate in the Games that will see athletes competing in 30 sports.
