Kanem Trust’s correspondent reports that many women, including nursing mothers, were, unusually sighted in gowns during the matriculation ceremony of students for the 2008/2009 academic session which took place at the Government Girls College, Damaturu recently. The women were to pursue various degrees and post graduate certificates.

“I am a full time house wife and decided to pursue my degree in the Open University which offers most of its services on line…I am proud to be here,” said Rifkatu Nuhu, who was among the 60 students that secured admission to read various courses.

Forty five-year-old Hadiza Usaini said she had been longing to go to school. “My husband had resisted all my attempts to go to a conventional university but when he was told about the Open University, he secured the admission for me”.

With the increased enrolment now, officials of the Damaturu centre of the university said the sum of N39 million was required to renovate structures at its permanent site located in Damaturu and therefore called on the state government to intervene for the development of education in the state.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Olugbemiro Jegede whose address was read by the Damaturu Centre Manager, Alhaji Muhammadu Machina, said because of the problem of infrastructure and finances, conventional universities found it difficult to admit many students, adding that the Open University was meant to take education to the door steps of the people.

“This year alone JAMB received over 1.5 million applications but the facilities in the 96 universities will not allow admission of more than 20% of this number”, the vice chancellor said.

He added that the Open University is therefore a formidable option for willing students to grab the opportunity to pursue various certificates with ease.
