Yobe to disburse N1.4bn to flood victims, establishes weather stations

The Yobe State government has approved the disbursement of N1.4 billion to assist 25,500 flood victims across all 17 local government areas of the state.

Briefing journalists after a State Executive Council meeting, Dr Mairo Amshi, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, announced that the council, led by Governor Mai Mala Buni, had approved the funds to alleviate the impact of flooding on the affected communities.

Dr Amshi explained that the approved amount of N1.436 billion will be distributed to the identified victims, with each local government area having 1,500 beneficiaries.

She further stated that surveys have been conducted to identify the victims, though the process is still ongoing in all 17 local government areas.

She assured that the process would be conducted with full transparency and accountability.

In a related development, the state government has established three weather stations in Machina, Damaturu, and Gulani local government areas.

The move, overseen by the State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, aims to improve the accuracy of weather data and reporting.

Ahmed Mohammed Abubakar, Director of Drought, Desertification, and Climate Change at the ministry, highlighted the importance of the weather stations in addressing climate challenges, such as flooding and sand dunes, which have severely impacted the livelihoods of Yobe residents.

During a training session for technical staff, Abubakar emphasised the significance of maintaining the weather instruments for accurate data collection.
