Yobe records highest revenue growth

Yobe State recorded the highest rise in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) between 2018 and 2019 as the revenue grew by 92.7% from N4.38 billion to N8.44 billion.

The state, which was at the bottom in IGR performance in 2018, has emerged one of the fastest-growing states in internally generated revenue (IGR) based on the latest published figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The organiser of the annual Nigerian States IGR summit and Managing Director of Alford Conferences Limited, Mr Frederick Apeji, made the disclosure in Damaturu while presenting an excellence in IGR award certificate to the Executive Chairman of Yobe State Board of Internal Revenue, Alhaji Ali Usman Ahmed.

He noted that in the NBS annual report titled, ‘Internally Generated Revenue at State Level (Quarter 4 2019 & Full Year 2019)’, dated May 2020, Yobe State grew its IGR by 92.70% during the year under review, while Zamfara and Osun states grew theirs by 87.85% and 72.64% respectively.

According to him, analysis of the reports by the Nigerian States IGR Summit showed that among the top 12 fastest growing states in IGR last year, nine are in the North (Yobe, Zamfara, Benue, Adamawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa and Jigawa), while the rest are in the South (Osun, Enugu, and Anambra).

He said the reason for the award was in line with the organisation’s drive to encourage and foster healthy competition among the FCT and the 36 states in order to substantially increase their internally generated revenue (IGR).

He said the event was organised with the goodwill and support of appropriate agencies of government which included the Joint Tax Board, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the Board of Internal Revenue of the 36 states and the FCT, among others.

Speaking shortly after receiving the award, the Permanent Secretary/Executive Chairman of Yobe State Board of Internal Revenue, Alhaji Ali Usman Ahmed, explained that the rapid performance in 2019 was not rocket science but by putting heads together and bringing in new policies to prevent the ugly performance in 2018 from re-occurring.
