To tackle the recurring challenge of flooding and its devastating impacts, the Yobe State Government has acquired a swamp buggy valued at N900 million. This investment aims to mitigate the annual flooding that often wreaks havoc on infrastructures and communities across the state.
Governor Mai Mala Buni, during the commissioning of the machine, highlighted its crucial role in dredging rivers and clearing waterways obstructed by overgrown vegetation along major rivers like Komadugu and Yobe.
“We purchased this machine to clear our waterways, especially wetlands, to ensure the free flow of water, particularly along Komadugu, Yobe and other tributaries. This initiative will significantly address the impact of climate change, particularly in areas prone to flooding,” Governor Buni said.

The governor emphasised the machine’s importance in supporting farmers engaged in irrigation farming during the rainy season and facilitating fishing activities. By enhancing water flow along tributaries, the swamp buggy will not only mitigate flooding but also boost agricultural productivity and livelihoods.
Shehu Alhaji Mohammed, the Yobe State project coordinator for ACReSAL, provided insight into the procurement, noting that the swamp buggy and its accompanying container were acquired at the cost of N900 million. He emphasised that the machine’s primary purpose was to clear water channels, particularly those originating from neighbouring states like Jigawa, to prevent flooding in Yobe.
