Four persons were confirmed dead, hundreds of families displaced, following a flood incident that wrecked havoc on 11 communities in two local government areas of Yobe State.

The Executive Secretary of Yobe State Emergency Management Agency , Dr Mohammed Goje disclosed the figures while giving an update on the flood on Monday.

Daily Trust reports that multiple floods which were caused by river overflow preceded a downpour in various locations of the State on Sunday.

Goje said the impact of the flood had assumed a threatening proportion, resulting to loss of lives and properties.

“Eleven communities (11) in Gulani and one in Gujba local government were affected by the disaster, leading to the displacement of over 100 households. Livestock and food reserves worth millions of naira were swept away by the flood.”

“Unfortunately four persons were reported dead while scores of others injured,” he said adding that four communities include; Gulani, Bara, Gagure and Njibulwa were rendered inaccessible as main bridge linking the towns was cut off.

He said the victims are currently taking refuge at government building across the communities.

“SEMA as directed by the Executive Governor of Yobe State, His Excellency Mai Mala Buni is mobilizing resources and intensifying effort to bring immediate relief “.

On Sunday, Buni sought the Federal Government’s assistance to the affected victims.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) team has said it will visit the flood scenes for subsidiary assessment.

A team from the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) had earlier taken assessment of the collapsed bridge.

Plans are being made to create an alternate route for movement into the communities.
