Four persons were confirmed dead while hundreds of families have been displaced following a flood incident that wreaked havoc on 11 communities in two local government areas of Yobe State.

The Executive Secretary of Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Mohammed Goje who disclosed the figures while giving an update on the flood Monday said the impact of the flood had assumed a threatening proportion, resulting in the loss of lives and properties.

Daily Trust reports that the floods which were caused by river overflow preceded a heavy downpour in various locations of the state on Sunday.

“Eleven communities in Gulani and one in Gujba local government were affected by the disaster, leading to the displacement of over 100 households. Livestock and food reserves worth millions of naira were swept away by the flood. Unfortunately, four persons were reported dead while scores of others were injured,” Gubio said.

Meanwhile, Governor Mai Mala Buni said the state government would establish the Local Government Emergency Management Committee (LGEMC) at the local level for early response to disasters.

Buni made the statement Monday, in Abuja when he visited the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) over the flood incident in Yobe.

According to him, the committee’s main task was to provide first-line support to victims of the disaster before interventions from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
