“The whole episode was like a drama…after the baby was delivered, the mother was taken to the maternity ward while the new baby was put in custody of his grandmother as relations kept on coming in and going out of the ward after looking at the baby”, Habu Ado, an eye witness said.
He said along the line, a woman, clad in Hijab equally entered the ward and pretended to be part of the well-wishers. “When she realised that the mother was sleeping, she advised the grandmother to go and pray the Zuhr prayers with the promise of looking after the new baby”, Ado said, adding that shortly after the grandma left the ward, the woman whisked him out of the hospital.
“After sometime, the grandmother was said to be uncomfortable with the arrangement and therefore rushed back but unfortunately, she only met the mother who was still sleeping. Visibly confused, the old woman raised alarm as cried to the best of her ability”, he added.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Yobe State, ASP Mohammed Pada, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, attributed the act to “wickedness, ritual tendencies and laxity on the part of the family of the distraught mother”. Up till the time of filing this report, nothing has been heard about the whereabouts of the abductor, even as the new mother continues to pray for the recovery of her child.
