Yobe auto crash claims seven persons

Seven people were confirmed dead and 10 injured in an auto crash involving an 18-seater bus conveying passengers to Gombe state, along Damaturu – Potiskum road, in Yobe state.

Confirming the accident, Mohammad Sani Hamzat, Sector Commander,   Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Yobe state command, said seventeen passengers were in the vehicle (Gombe line mass transit)

He said the driver was over-speeding when he had a rear tyre burst and lost control as “the car plunged to the other lane and crashed”.

He said that seven people died instantly and his men rescued ten of the passengers that sustained various degree of injuries.

“The injured are currently receiving treatment at the hospital, while the dead were in the morgue,” he added.

He attributed the accident to high speed and use of expired tyres.

He called on motorists to always have a regular check of the expiry date of their vehicles, and advised passengers to always caution the over-speeding drivers.

A source in Maiduguri said that the seven passengers that died in the accident were student of University of Maiduguri.
