The governor, who received the midwives at the ministry of health premises, said state government would also give them accommodation and other logistics in order to make their work which aims addressing maternal and child death in the state, to become attained.

The health workers who are to collect N30,000 from the federal government will now be going home with N55, 000 following courtesy of Yobe’s largesse.

Gaidam said the health workers would be posted to 24 health centres located in all the 17 local government areas of the state.

“This scheme has come at the right time as available records indicate that our part of the country has the highest infant and maternal mortality rates”, Gaidam said.

“Further more, the scheme will assist our state in addressing the key Millennium Development Goals set target of reducing child death by two-third and maternal  death by three-quarter respectively”, the governor added.

Gaidam said he would do everything possible to ensure that the Midwives Service Scheme succeeded in the state.

He said contract had been awarded for the construction of 200 bed capacity hospital in Damaturu and also introduced free maternal and child health care services in all hospitals.

The zonal coordinator of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency Dr Lawan Hadejia said the midwives were drawn from all the states of the federal with the aim of assisting state governments address critical health issues.
