Yobe allocates 5% budget to IDPs

The Yobe State government has unveiled an integrated recovery plan for the sustainable resettlement, reconstruction, and rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

This initiative will see the state allocate 5% of its annual budget to aid displaced persons.

The policy launch marks a significant milestone in addressing the complex challenges IDPs face in Yobe State.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, Governor Mai Mala Buni highlighted the policy’s importance in meeting the immediate needs of IDPs and protecting their rights and dignity.

“This policy is the result of consultations with stakeholders and reflects our collective determination to protect the rights and dignity of IDPs,” said Governor Buni.

“The policy is grounded in key principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence. It outlines our strategic objectives in providing protection, ensuring access to essential services, and fostering sustainable solutions for displacement,” he added.

Governor Buni called on stakeholders to support and empower IDPs, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to foster peace, stability, and opportunity within the state.

Suleiman Dauda, Solid Project Coordinator, disclosed that the policy had identified several resource mobilization avenues to ensure both the action plan for durable solutions and the policy itself is implemented. He noted that Yobe State has already committed 5% of its annual budget to this cause.

“The state government has everything it needs to make the policy work,” Dauda stated. “Conceptualizing the IDP policy envisions a dignified, safe, and voluntary solution to their displacement.”

Baba Mallam Wali, Secretary to the Yobe State Government (SSG), remarked that the Yobe State Policy on Internally Displaced Persons aims to create a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous environment for all residents.
