Yadai community begs for social amenities

Yadai community in Gabasawa Local Government Area of Kano State has called on the government to come to their aid with the provision of social amenities that have eluded the area.

Members of the community said the area had been in dire need of a health facility, potable water, access road, as well as a school to at least make government presence in the area.

During a visit, Chronicle observed that the community has an old well as the only source of water. A hand pump constructed in 1993 in the community has stopped working 11 years ago and a series of requests to fix it have fallen on deaf ears.

The community members and children have to travel far distances to access health care services and school respectively. The only access road to the village is also in bad condition.

The Village Head, Usman Muhammad, who spoke through his assistant, Abdullahi Usman said “We have been neglected for years as our people have not seen any dividend of democracy.

“Despite our several pleas for a healthcare facility, water supply, school and road, to our surprise the only intervention that came to us was a viewing centre, which has even packed up and has no value to our well-being.

“We would have even loved the authorities to convert the viewing centre to a health facility. We have written a formal request to that effect but there is no response.

“Our students have to walk daily for about three kilometres to the nearest school for their education. We appeal to the government to please help and provide social amenities in our area,” he added

The village head added, ironically, that it was only during the election period that the government remembered them.

Abdullahi Hassan, a member of the community, said every year youths leave the area for greener pasture in faraway places because life in the community was difficult.

“The youths are the future of the community but they don’t want to stay because of the dearth of social amenities. We fear as our future will continue to be bleak; no education, no healthcare services and no access road,” he said.

When contacted, the spokesman for Kano State Ministry of Rural and Community Development, Lawal Dan Hassan said the ministry had not received any complaints from the community, adding that “if there is any development we shall get across.”
