WRAPA sensitises North-East women on Gender-based violence

Women Right Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) has conducted a three-day sensitisation workshop for 60 volunteers, aimed at building their capacity for effective coverage of Gender-based Violence.

Community Mobilisation Officer of WRAPA, Mr Mohammed Maifada, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen at the end of the training held in Gombe.

He said WRAPA as a non-profit organisation is committed to increasing women’s access to justice through legal means.

According to him, they had recruited 60 volunteers across the six states in the Northeast sub-region.

“We are strengthening their capacity for effective coverage, because as volunteers they are the ones to identify problems at the community levels to support survivors and victims of GBV to help them secure justice.

“We also want to ensure that women and girls are not left behind in peace building, social and gender inclusion as well as decision-making at the community level,” Maifada said.

Zonal Coordinator of WRAPA, Hajiya Lami Buba, said discrimination against women and girls starts from birth where some families choose to send only male children to school, while some men don’t allow their wives to go to work.

She said some of the achievements recorded by the WRAPA, were the establishment of women centres in various places to take care of women that were discriminated against either in marriage or by in-laws.

The state coordinator WRAPA, Mrs Anita Dogo said the organisation has sponsored and won legal cases, especially on issues of rape against women and minor children.
