World School Athletics Championship Trials end in Abeokuta

Ahead of the 2023 World School Athletics Championship, Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) has concluded a two-day World School Athletics Trials where over 1,300 students competed to be selected.

Participants from primary and secondary schools across 24 states including Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa and hosts, Ogun participated in the trials to select Nigeria’s contingent for the 2023 World School Athletics Championships to be held later in the year.

The World Athletics Trials which was held in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, featured track and field events for U-12, U-15 and U-18 athletes.

According to the president of Nigeria School Sport Federation, Olabisi Joseph, students selected from the event will soon start camping ahead of the country’s participation at the global events.

She commended the Ogun State Government for hosting the trials and lauded the support of stakeholders for the successful staging of the two-day championship.

Joseph, who is also the Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), urged the government, corporate organizations and well-meaning individuals to support the body in sponsoring the athletes to Turkey.

“NSSF will commence preparations in earnest in order to ensure that the athletes excel at the ISF organized competitions, government and private organisations should show their support,” she said.

Events competed at the NSSF World School Athletics Trials were 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 1500 meters, 3000 meters, Long Jump, High Jump, Discuss and Shot Put for boys and girls.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) also commended NSSF for the smooth organization of the trials which they believed would help to unearth talents for the country.
