The Universal Learning Solutions (ULS) on Wednesday expressed excitement as it joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2023 World Read Aloud Day.

World Read Aloud Day is held annually on the first Wednesday of February.

In a statement signed by Sylvanus Udoenoh, its IT and Communications Officer, ULS said the celebration was aimed at reminiscing the fun, love, and value of children reading.

The statement said, “A literate child is the ultimate dream of every parent, guardian, and educator, and is a valuable asset to the society at large, as literacy is pivotal to every individual’s growth and productivity.

“As the world celebrates today, we are glad to share with parents, teachers, and guardians, the alternative ways of instruction and to engage learners with the power of books and reading within and outside the classroom.

“Reading aloud and telling stories helps to shape learners’ understanding of their culture and family values. In our classrooms, homes, and communities, World Read Aloud Day is a major opportunity to celebrate the simple joy of reading, especially with our children. Furthermore, research shows that allowing a child to read aloud daily enables them to build their fluency and comprehension skills.”

Also speaking, ULSI’s Country Director, Patrick Uzu, said: “let us use this great day to celebrate the joy of reading aloud and the impact that Jolly Phonics is delivering in making this possible across the Federation”. In the words of Mrs. Roseline Medubi, Director of Academic Services at the Universal Basic Education Commissions, “Reading is fun, it provides for long-term growth and productivity, and Jolly Phonics has assisted us in achieving this objective”.

“These innovations are our contributions to fostering this global effort of eradicating illiteracy in our world. It is our hope that with these efforts and support, the number of out-of-school children will be drastically reduced to ensure a vibrant and prosperous society in Nigeria”, said Naomi Foxcroft, Executive Director of Universal Learning Solutions (ULS).
