World Health Day 2024: Prioritizing health in challenging times

As we commemorated World Health Day on April 7, 2024, I am compelled to issue a personal call to action to the Nigerian government at all levels to prioritize the health and well-being of our citizens, even amidst the challenges posed by our current economic climate.

It is evident that many Nigerians are hesitant to seek healthcare services due to concerns about limited resources. This hesitancy is understandable, as the cost of healthcare can be prohibitive for many families, particularly those facing financial strain. As a result, individuals may delay or forgo essential medical treatment, leading to exacerbated health issues and preventable suffering.

This World Health Day serves as a poignant reminder that access to healthcare is not a luxury, but a fundamental human right. Every Nigerian deserves the right to quality healthcare, regardless of their economic status. It is imperative that our government takes proactive measures to ensure that healthcare services are accessible and affordable for all.

I urge the Nigerian government to prioritize healthcare funding and allocate resources to expand access to essential services across the country. This includes investing in infrastructure, healthcare facilities, medical personnel, and essential medications. Additionally, measures should be implemented to address the root causes of healthcare inequities, including poverty, unemployment, and inadequate social services.

Furthermore, efforts must be made to instil confidence in our healthcare system and encourage Nigerians to seek timely medical care without fear of financial hardship. This may involve wider coverage of healthcare financing mechanisms such as health insurance schemes or subsidizing healthcare costs for vulnerable populations, including children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

As we navigate through these challenging times, let us not forget that the health of our nation is our greatest wealth. Investing in healthcare is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic investment in the future prosperity and well-being of our nation.

On this World Health Day, let us come together as a nation to reaffirm our commitment to prioritizing the health of Nigerians. Together, we can build a healthier, more resilient society where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
