A statement signed by the Director General, Research and Documentation, Government House Kano, Mallam Ibrahim Ado Kurawa, said that the administration of Governor Ibrahim Shekarau had committed this sum because of its massive infrastructural development policy.

According to the statement, the deputy governor of Kano, Engineer Abdullahi Gwarzo, made the disclosure while receiving the Minister of Works, Housing and Urban Development, Dr Hassan Lawan in his office last week.

Engineer Gwarzo said that a sum of N1.8 billion was expended on road projects inherited from the previous administration, while a total of N10 billion was expended on the construction of 285 kilometers of inter- state roads.

Continuing, the deputy governor added that a total of over N700 million was committed to the maintenance of roads in the state, adding that already over 80 urban roads are currently being reconstructed within the metropolis.

While expressing the appreciation of the people and government of Kano State to its overall development, he noted the Federal Government’s commitment to the Western Bye- pass project, the improvement of energy supply to the state, the irrigation infrastructure provided at Bagwai, the improvement of the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) as well as the recent contract for the rehabilitation of the Kano– Katsina road project.

Gwarzo further appealed to the Federal Government to dualize the Kano- Gwarzo-Dayi road, Hadejia road as well as expand the Tanburawa – Kano Technical College axis of Zaria road to give room for a freer flow of traffic.

“I admitted the immense significance of the ongoing construction of the Kano-Maiduguri road project to the people of the affected states as well as the entire people of the West African sub-region. The road is an important link to the North Eastern States of the Federation: Chad Republic and the Central Republic.

He therefore cautioned that based on current statistics, the frequency of road accidents on the road was taking toll, hence the need to step up the pace of construction works at the site.
