Hundreds of women protest herdsmen presence in Edo

Hundreds of women from Uromi community, the administrative headquarters of Esan North-East local government area of Edo state, took to the streets to protest incessant rape and kidnaps by suspected herdsmen.

They are calling on state government and security agents for help, insisting they can’t go to their farms for fear of kidnap and rape.

It was gathered that the women who are from Uromi town and neighbouring communities later blocked the township roads, urging herdsmen to leave their communities.

A community source who gave his name as Odion said the protest disrupted the free flow of traffic within the Uromi township.

He said the women marched to the One palace to register their displeasure on spate kidnapping and raping in the area.

Meanwhile, when contacted State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, who confirmed the incident said it has been brought under control.

“The Police Area Commander in the area, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Uromi, and other security agents, have intervene and the situation has been brought under control.

“As I speak with you now, there is calm in Uromi and everybody is going about without any molestation,” he said.
