Some women leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) across the 23 local government areas of Benue State on Wednesday staged a protest at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

The protesters led by the state factional women leader of the APC, Princess Nancy Awuese Torher, asked the party’s national chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to intervene in the crisis which she said was capable of collapsing the party’s structure in the state if not resolved.

The Benue State chapter of the APC is enmeshed in crisis as the Austin Agada-led faction backed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and that of Benjamin Omakolo, backed by the state governor, Hyacinth Alia are both claiming legitimacy.

The factional women leader, Torher who is in the Agada-led faction in a petition addressed to Ganduje, also asked the national woman leader, Dr. Mary Allie Idele, to be impartial in discharging her official duties regarding the Benue crisis, saying she remained the authentic state women leader.

She said the notice of the contrary decision not recognising her as the Benue State woman leader of APC has not been communicated to her.

She said, “It is shocking to see that the national woman leader has violated this decision by inviting an imposter to an event as Benue State woman leader and recognising one Benjamin Omakolo as the state Chairman.

“Allowing this breach of order to proceed will further deepen the APC’s intra-party crisis in Benue State and could lead to the collapse of the party structure.”
