Women in Ibagwa community in Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of Benue State Thursday decried the degradation of their farmlands due to mining activities.

The women called on the state government for intervention to preserve their land, stressing the need for a state policy to regulate miners’ activities.

The leader of the women, Mrs Veronica Onaji, lamented the pitiable situation of the community during an advocacy visit to the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women in Agriculture (NAWIA) and dRPC.

“Tremors and vibrations from the mines have caused cracks and cultural damages to buildings and property in close proximity to the mines. We are helpless.”

Responding, the commissioner, represented by the Director, Agric Science, Dr Thomas Unongo, promised to investigate the findings reported by the women so as to address the issue in line with the law.
