The National Center for Women’s Development has commenced the training of 115 female artisans in skill acquisition courses such as tiling, plumbing, A/C repairs, electrical installation etc.
The inauguration of the training took place at the National Center for Women Development.
In her opening remarks, the DG of the National center for Women’s development, Dr Asabe Vilita Bashir, said the idea of the training is to empower female youths as skilled workers who will have a competitive edge over their male counterparts.
She also said, “In the face of unemployment and global change, women are now being encouraged to learn skills in sectors that are usually male-dominated. There’s nothing that states these skills must only be harnessed by men, all it takes is the brain and the hands which women have.”
Partnering with the NCWD, Communications officer for the development research and project center DRPC, Victoria Hashim, said the project is targeted at making sure that women are empowered economically as that will aid in bridging the gap in gender equality and achieving sustainable development goals.
One of the trainees who will be learning AC repairs, Mrs Rebecca Aliyu, expressed gratitude for being one of the selected participants.
she said; “I’ve come to understand men and women have the same brain, so therefore anything a man can do, a woman can also do. It’s a thing of joy to see many women learn the skills which were originally preserved for only the men. i’m not concerned about being a woman working in a male dominated sector, rather i’m only encouraged to give my very best”.
