Women from Billiri town in Gombe state on Friday blocked Gombe -Yola Federal Highway, to protest the killing of a farmer allegedly by youth from neighbouring Shongom Local Government Area.

According to a resident of Billiri who spoke to Daily Trust on phone, the protesting women stormed the road around 10am, blocking many motorists plying the highway to Adamawa, Taraba and Benue states, in addition to many markets in neighbouring towns and villages, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded.

Our correspodnent reports that the protesters are also demanding the release of over 20 youths arrested by the military personnel deployed to restore peace in the town.

At the time of filing this report, the protesters are still occupying the road settiing bonfires.  

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Tairu Shina Olukolu, confirmed the incident to newsmen. He said that he was on his way to Billiri to contain the crisis and facilitate free access of vehicles on the highway.
