Woman remanded for stealing newborn in Kwara

A 23-year-old woman, Nike Owolabi, has been remanded by a magistrates’ court for stealing a newborn baby from the Ajisafe Hospital, Omu Aran, Kwara State.

According to the police, Nike, native of Ora, Osun State, perpetrated the act when she visited the hospital with the pretense of greeting a patient, Blessing Alabi, who had delivered a baby through cesarean section (CS).

The police further told the court that Nike then picked the baby, backed her and was leaving the hospital when she was caught by Rachael Alabi, mother-in-law to the baby’s mother.

The police also said, “The hospital’s CCTV captured how Nike roamed the facility, greeting patients who are not her relations with a view to study the terrain and perpetrate the evil act.”

The prosecutor, Insp Adewumi Johnson, urged the court to remand the defendant pending further investigation.

The magistrate, Saliu Muhammed, ordered the defendant to be remanded and adjourned the case to March 8, 2022.
