A Makurdi magistrates’ court sitting in Benue State has remanded a 57-year-old woman in a correction centre over alleged criminal conspiracy, assault and causing grievous bodily hurt on her house help.
The prosecutor, Inspector Jonah Olutu, told the court that on March 24, 2023, at about 0800 hours, a distress call was received at ‘E’ Division, Makurdi, that one Mrs Ahemen Jam of behind ‘E’ Division conspired with her son, Ornguga Jam (at large), and beat their house help, Kpamor Jir, and inflicted wounds on his buttocks.
He further told the court that investigation into the matter revealed that the injuries were inflicted on the child between March 17, 2023 and March 24, 2023, while the duo beat the child daily with electric cables.

When the charges were read to the accused, she pleaded not guilty, and her counsel, D. K. Iorhemba, made an oral application for her bail.
The Magistrate, J. S. Iorshe, told the counsel to the accused to make a formal bail application for his client and ordered that she be remanded and adjourned to May 17.
