Woman lands in prison for stealing 4-month-old baby

A 66-year-old woman, Adebisi Balogun has been remanded at the Correctional Centre in Ilesa for allegedly stealing a four months old baby in Osogbo, Osun State capital.

It was learnt that the woman was arrested after her neighbours at Ayetoro area of Osogbo, raised alarm following the discovery of the baby in her custody.

The woman, who was taken to Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters in Osogbo for interrogation, claimed that she bought the baby from some merchants due to her childlessness.

Balogun, who spoke in Yoruba language claimed that one Iya Tope took her to Ore in Ondo State where she bought the baby for N1.4 million.

The woman was arraigned at the Osogbo Magistrate’s court where she was charged with conspiracy and theft while the police kept the baby at an orphanage in Osogbo.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Kayode told the court that the baby found in her possession went missing in April.

Kayode said the offence committed by the woman was contrary to and punishable under Sections 516, 371(1), and 249(D) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

Balogun pleaded guilty to the offence levelled against her and her counsels, Okobe Najite and M.O. Akinwande, urged the court to be lenient with her. The Magistrate, A. O. Daramola adjourned the case till October 12
