A Kano State high court has sentenced a woman, Medinat Hassan (32), to two years imprisonment for attempting to procure the illegal entry of another woman, Alia Kehinde (29), from Oyo State, Nigeria, to Libya through Niger Republic.

Medinat, of No 10 Bode Market, Akinyoyo Street, Ibadan, Oyo State, was arrested on September 18, in Kano State while trying to traffic the victim to Libya.

A one-count charge prepared by the Kano Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) indicated that the victim was not a citizen or permanent resident of either Niger Republic or Libya.

When the charge was read to the accused, she pleaded guilty and urged the court to temper justice with mercy.

The defense counsel, Barrister M. B. Isah, urged the court to give the convict a fine option.

Justice Maryam Sabo held that, “The convict is hereby sentenced to two years imprisonment in addition to paying a compulsory fine of N250,000 or one year in default.”
