The police in Bauchi State have arrested a 24-year-old housewife, Furera Abubakar, over the alleged killing of a four-day-old baby (stepson) at the Bantu village, Ningi LGA of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Wakil, who disclosed the arrest of the suspects in a statement said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a co-wife to the nursing mother (victim’s mother).
‘‘The suspect entered the co-wife’s room with insecticide liquid (Gamalin) and applied it to the unhealed baby’s umbilical cord.
“The liquid which was suspected to be corrosively infected, led to the deterioration of the baby’s health, which eventually led to his death,” Wakil alleged.

He said the incident was reported at the Ningi Divisional Police Headquarters on August 19, 2023. The baby was born on August 15 and poisoned by the suspect on August 19, 2023, before the naming ceremony.
Wakil added that investigation was still on and that the suspect would be charged to court accordingly.
