Woman, 25, stabbed for allegedly ‘snatching’ boyfriend

“The fellow I was talking with ran away when he saw that I’d been stabbed. I started running too, but the lady followed me and continued to stab me on several parts of my back and face. When I couldn’t stop her, I shouted for help,” Aisha said.

Her shout brought some people to her rescue and they took her to Mabushi Police Station with blood dripping down her body and face. The lady ran way, but was later apprehended.

“I was on my way home when I was called and told what happened,” said Dan Yellow, the manager of the drama group. “I headed to the lady’s house and saw her outside her house with a broken bottle in her hand. I heard some people telling her to run away, so I swiftly ran after her. I held her firmly and took the bottle away from her hand. I held her by her clothes and dragged her to the police station. We then took Aisha to Abuja Clinic where we deposited N26,000 before she was attended to,” he said.

The case was later transferred from Mabushi Police to Utako Divisional Police Headquarters. When Weekly Trust spoke to the two ladies, Aisha informed told Weekly Trust that she neither knew the lady before the incident nor did she go out with her boyfriend.

“I came here (the drama troupe) only two weeks ago. I had never seen the lady before. What I heard from friends was that the girl did what she did to me because she thought I was going out with her boyfriend.”

But the lady, Amina Suleiman, said Aisha was economical with the truth, as she had seen her with her boyfriend several times.

“I always see them together, and whenever I see them, I would call my guy, Dahiru, and ask him what his relationship with Aisha. But he always told me that he was trying to convince the lady to go out with his friend. One day, I called him to the room and asked why he always beat me whenever he sees me with another man, while I always see him with Aisha. He said any other time I see him with the girl, I should do anything I like with her.

“On the day I stabbed her, we were together in the room around 12am when he suddenly picked his mobile phone and mine and went out. When I asked him where he was going, he told me he was coming; that he forgot something that he had to pick from a friend’s place. After some minutes, he did not return, so I decided to trace him. Suddenly, I saw him and the lady hugging each other. I started fighting him and the lady said if I had to fight, I should fight the two of them, and she joined in the fight. Then I got a bottle nearby and used it to stab her. She too removed razor blade from her purse and started cutting me,” Amina said.

Amina who is also an artiste from another drama club said she did what she did because the boy had promised to marry her. “I am two months pregnant for him. I informed him of the pregnancy a week ago,” she said.

However, an Abuja Magistrate Court has sentenced Amina to one-month imprisonment for causing grievous hurt to a fellow lady.

Prosecutor Mustapha Mohammed had earlier informed the court that one Aisha Ali of Mabushi village reported at Utako Police Station that the convict voluntarily stabbed her with a broken bottle with an intention to disfigure her.

“The accused voluntarily caused grievous hurt to the complainant, and as a result, she was treated at Abuja Clinic with a medical bill of N26,196,” he stated.

When the charge was read to the convict, she pleaded guilty and begged the court to temper justice with mercy. Following her guilty plea, the prosecutor asked the court to try her summarily.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Hafsat Soso convicted and sentenced her to one-month imprisonment with an option of N3,000 fine. She also ruled that the convict should pay N26,196 as the medical bill incurred by the complainant. But after the court’s ruling, Dan Yellow said they are going to appeal as they were not happy with the way the case was handled.

“Despite all the things I am doing to ensure that the injured lady gets well, the leader of the other drama group has not cared to come and sympathise with her or assist with the medical bills. When I saw that the situation was being treated with levity, I decided to report at the police station, so that Aisha could get justice. Now, the money we have spent could exceed the N26,196, because she is still undergoing treatment at the hospital,” he said, while holding Aisha’s hand and leading her to their car.
