Wizkid, Davido or Burna Boy – who has the best single so far in 2022?

Nigerian music is on the rise, breaking international records and receiving several nominations and awards. It consists of a specific kind of folk music including Afrobeats and Afrofusion. These styles of folk music are related to the number of ethnic groups in the country, each with their methods, instruments, and songs. In the past decade, global interest in the country’s music has increased significantly largely due to the heroics of Burna Boy, Davido and Wizkid.

The trio have snagged numerous awards, shattered several records, and shared the stage with the biggest names in the global music industry.

They also boast of a huge fan base, who are often divided over supremacy debate about them.

This year, each of them has already put out a single much to the delight of their fans across the world.

In May, Burna Boy and Davido released their first single of the year titled ‘Last Last’, and ‘Stand Strong’ respectively.

On September 14, Wizkid also came through with ‘Bad to Me’, his first single of the year.

As expected, conversations over which of them has the best track so far in 2022 have started garnering momentum in some quarters.

On May 13, Burna Boy released ‘Last Last’, the second track off his sixth studio album titled ‘Love Damini’. A fraction of the song’s instrumental was from American singer Toni Braxton’s 2000 single, ‘He Wasn’t Man Enough’.

It didn’t take long before the track became a street athem with widespread reception.

The hit song has peaked at number one on several music charts including the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA), UK Afrobeats (official charts), UK Hip/Hop R&B (Official Charts), and US Afrobeats Songs (Billboard’s). It also ranked second on US World Digital Song Sales (Billboard).

In addition, the song has bagged several certificates including two golds from the Canadian music and New Zealand music industry, as well as a silver from British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in the United Kingdom.

The ‘African Giant’ crooner had earlier revealed that the song was about heartbreak, which many linked to his breakup with Stefflon Don, the British rapper.

‘STAND STRONG’ – DAVIDO

Davido released ‘Stand Strong’ on the same day with Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last’.

In the song, Davido featured The Samples, American Choir recognised for co-leading rapper Kanye West’s ‘Sunday Service’.

‘Stand Strong’ has a type of harmonious feeling which differs from Davido’s previous songs. It achieved the number one spot on the Apple Music Top 100 Global Song Chart and Top 100 Songs Chart in 15 other countries.

Speaking about the song, the ‘OBO’ singer had said: “This one is special to me. It’s different. The conception has been different. The mindset has been different”.

‘BAD TO ME’ – WIZKID

Recently, Wizkid came through with ‘Bad to Me’, a feel-good song good for a party.

The song has earned commendations from Wizkid’s fans due to its blend of Amapiano and Afrobeats. Although recently released, the song has already started pulling the strings. It has peaked at number one the Nigerian top 100 charts on Apple Music. It has also continued to ignite several reactions on the social media.

No doubt, all the three songs from the music stars have wonderful lyrics, instrumentals and are unique.
