The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased by 150 per cent the prize money for the 12th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) which gets underway in Morocco on Saturday.
The tournament will kick off with hosts Morocco facing Burkina Faso at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

The competition’s overall prize money has been increased from 975,000 U.S. dollars to 2.4 million U.S. dollars —— an increase of almost 1.5 million U.S. dollars.
The winners of this year’s edition of the 2022 WAFCON will pocket 500,000 U.S. dollars, an increase of 300,000 U.S. dollars, representing 150 per cent.
Previous winners of this competition received 200,000 U.S. dollars.
The prize money for the runners-up has almost doubled from 175,000 U.S. dollars to 300,000 U.S. dollars.
The semi-finalists will get 225,000 U.S. dollars each, which has increased from 125,000 U.S. dollars.
CAF said in a statement on Saturday that the increase is in line with its new policy to make women’s football in Africa globally competitive.
“The CAF President and the CAF Executive Committee have identified women’s football as amongst the confederation’s top priorities,” it said. (NAN)
