Wife divorces husband for smoking Indian hemp

A Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan has dissolved a two-year-old marriage between a fashion designer, Mrs Adija Adebayo and Mr. Ademola Adebayo, over the husband’s habitual smoking of Indian hemp.

Testifying before the president of the court, the petitioner, a resident of Academy Area in Ibadan, said she was forced to approach the court for separation because her husband not only abuses their one and a half year-old child, but that he also destroys her working tools after smoking Indian hemp.

“My lord, there is nothing I have not done to stop Ademola from habitual consumption of marijuana, but he keeps frustrating my efforts and embarrassing me.

“In fact, he carries our little child to a cannabis smoking joint where the child inhales the dangerous substance and learns to smoke.

“Whenever Ademola returns home with him, the child usually mimics how smoking is done by describing with his fingers in his mouth which has now become a problem to me.

“He has destroyed almost all my tailoring tools including tearing most of my clothes whenever he unleashes mayhem on me,” Adija said.

Ademola, a commercial driver, however, opposed the suit and denied being a hard drug taker.

He prayed the court not to separate them because he still loves his wife and their child.

“I want this court to know that I have tolerated Adija enough despite the fact that she is a dirty housewife who cannot keep the house clean. In addition, she is engaged in extra-marital affairs with one Mallam.

“The man calls her on mobile phone and they both speak the Hausa language; she cheats me because I don’t understand Hausa,” Ademola said.

The judge, Chief Ademola Odunade, pronounced the marriage dissolved in the interest of peace.

He awarded custody of the only child between them to Adija and ordered Ademola to pay N5,000 as the child’s monthly feeding allowance in addition to being responsible for his education and other basic needs.
