Why Yauri students’ release was stalled at last minutes

Students and staff of the Federal Government College Birnin Yauri were yet to reunite with their families despite heightened hopes last week.

The victims were abducted four months ago by gunmen loyal to the bandits’ kingpin, Dogo Gide.

Six of the abductees were released by the bandits in two batches as part of talks for the release of the victims.

Daily Trust had reported release of the students last week following interviews with some parents of the abducted students who were readying to reunite with the abductees.

But fresh facts indicated that the release of the students and their teachers could not be perfected due to communication gap.

“The telecom shutdown and ongoing military operation in these areas is affecting communication and movements. The kidnapped persons are not being held in one place and rounding them up has been tough. But a decision is reached now that they should be brought out in batches if gathering all of them would be difficult,” a source with knowledge of the rescue effort told Daily Trust.

Some of the victims’ relatives contacted declined to comment on record but said they were still hopeful of reuniting with their abducted family members soon.

The Kebbi State Government has repeatedly assured parents and relatives of the victims that the government would not rest on its oars until the victims were rescued.
