The National Hajj Commission Thursday explained that the mode of payment by Saudi authorities to victims of the 2015 crane crash delayed its payment.
Two victims of the crash had petitioned the Kaduna State Government to help in the recovery of the money paid to the victims of the crash through NAHCON.
However, NAHCON spokesman, Fatima Sanda Usara, in a statement yesterday, said the commission received payment for the compensation, but the cheques it received had issues.
“First, the cheques were issued in the names of the dead victims, and secondly the cheques were issued in dollars to the victims. The commission wrote to the Central Bank of Nigeria seeking guidance on how to process the payment of the cheques received in U.S Dollars to beneficiaries through their various state governors.”
Usara said “CBN replied the commission that there were no means to clear the cheques in any Nigerian bank, consequently, it was advised that the “cheques be payable to NAHCON’s account in CBN for monetization and dispensation to beneficiaries.”
