Friends and the family of former Nigerian head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, said they took the initiative to organise his 90th birthday so that it is not hijacked and blown out of proportion.
General Gowon will clock 90 on October 19.
A former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, who is the chairman of the National Planning Committee for the celebration, said they did not involve the federal government and corporate organisations in the celebration due to Gowon’s request not to have an elaborate ceremony.
Gana, at a press conference in Abuja yesterday, said activities had been carefully organised to honour Gowon’s achievements and lasting impact on Nigeria and beyond without violating his principle of humility.

“General Yakubu Gowon’s leadership during one of the most challenging periods in our nation’s history was the demonstration of his deep love for Nigeria and his dedication to the cause of our national unity.
“His vision for a strong and, united and prosperous Nigeria has shaped the course of our development and continues to inspire generations of Nigerians, “ he said
Events for the celebration include a public lecture titled ‘Salute to Excellence’ by the president of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adeshina, under the chairmanship of the Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar; while the special guest of honour is former President Goodluck Jonathan. Gana said as a mark of honour to Gowon, Nigerians should work together to build a prosperous and united country across ethnic, religious and social divides.
