Shamsudeen is a political thug in Kaduna South LGA. According to him, politicians pay them to follow them to political rallies, and sometimes meetings. He also said they are also paid to intimidate other political opponents during rallies.

Shamsudeen narrated how they were paid to accompany some aspirants contesting for Kaduna South to APC National Secretariat, in Abuja. “They paid us N2,000 from Kaduna to Abuja and also gave us N500 each for food. They hired ten 18-seater buses to Abuja, full of youths. We left Kaduna around 5:30am, and nobody told us what we are going to do in Abuja until we got there and they gave us placards with inscriptions against a senatorial aspirant,” he said.

Shamsudeen also explained that among them there were those who joined up solely because of the N2,000.

“All we need is money, and we don’t have a particular political party. I work for both PDP and APC aspirants. Money is money. Plus it’s the same money we collected from the politicians that some of us use to buy drugs during campaigns.”

Asked about the recruitment process, he explained: “The politicians don’t approach us personally, but through youth leaders, who will contact guys to get ready for a campaign rally. Most times, money is what pushes us to thuggery, since we do not have work. If I did, how could anyone take me to Abuja and pay me N2,000?”

Shamsudeen said a few months ago he and his cohorts accompanied a state assembly aspirant to purchase a form at the party secretariat, and were each paid N,1000.”
