The director general of Usani campaign organization, Ekpenyong Cobham has insisted that Usani Usani cannot resign his appointment as minister of the Niger Delta Affairs ministry even as he is ready to contest this weekend’s governorship election in Cross River State.
The INEC electoral rules say that any party’s candidate going for election must resign his appointment 30 days before the actual election.
But Cobham said because the matter on who actually is the true gubernatorial candidate of the APC in the state had not been declared by the court, the minister can go ahead and contest the governorship election.
“Pastor Usani can not resign his appointment as minister now because the court is yet to decide on the matter of APC governorship in the state”, he said.
Speaking to journalists in Calabar after last presidential and National Assembly elections, the minister himself said that the matter of his resignation should not be an issue for public domain.
“My letter of resignation will not be advertised on the blackboard for the public to view. What if that has been done. You expect me to go about telling everyone about it? When I win the election, anyone is free to go to the tribunal to challenge me”, he had said.
