The chairman, Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Sokoto State chapter, Mustapha Shehu, has explained why local government councils in the state are not performing optimally.
According to him, Sokoto has the highest number of local government employees.

“We have 23 local government areas with over 50,000 workers, which is far more than the local government employees of Kano State that has 44 local government areas.
“We all depend on the monthly allocation from the federation account to pay salaries of our staff aside of other statutory deductions. Believe me, majority of the areas cannot pay staff salaries after the deductions,” he said.
Shehu, who is the incumbent chairman of Sokoto South LGC, was reacting to critics who claimed that local government chairmen were not doing well despite receiving huge monthly allocations.
