Why social media addiction affects youths – Oyedepo

Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, has said the present generation is bereft of heroes because of the diverse distractions from social media beyond their control.

Dr. Oyedepo spoke at the 15th convocation ceremony of the university at Ota, in Ogun State.

“We have been talking about natural disasters but now, we have one with us that is more deadly than coronavirus as many innocent destinies have been wrecked.

“Many youths today are busy seeking short-cuts; many crave to build skyscrapers without any foundation to sustain them. Cybercrime has been on the increase globally as many youths hate the word ‘Work’,” Oyedepo noted.

The founder and presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church admonished young people to seek vision, invest their time and place real value on their time; rather than spend all their time on social media platforms that rob them of their future.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, said, “The performance of our graduates in the world of work has consistently validated this commitment. Our methodology for developing entrepreneurially minded students has witnessed the rise of viable start-ups having global identities.”

He said some of the start-ups from the school include Softcom, ThriveAgric, PiggyVest, KoraPay, Cloudware Technologies Inc., Agrorite.com and Social Prefect Tours.

The university at the convocation ceremony conferred 1,664 students with bachelor’s degrees with 201 First Class recipients. There were 254 others for higher degrees comprising PhD, Masters and MBAs.
