The House of Representatives at its plenary upon resumption from recess had an exhaustive debate on the rising spate of insecurity plaguing the country in recent times.
The lawmakers after a dispassionate debate on the prevailing security situations passed a resolution urging the service chiefs to resign their appointments in view of their alleged failure to tame the security challenges in the country.
Perhaps, the lawmakers chose not to hit the nail on the head, else, they would have just straightway asked President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the service chiefs for their non performance, as he’s the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
To me and other Nigerians, the call by the lawmakers couldn’t have come at a better time than now when hundreds of Nigerians are being killed by suspected members of the Boko Haram in the North East while kidnapping and banditry reign supreme in the North West and North Central regions.
Many Nigerians and security experts had in the past called for an overhaul of the nation’s security architecture to ensure better results in tackling insecurity.
While we commend the various efforts by the nation’s service chiefs in terms of land, air and sea operations to tackle insecurity, such efforts appear not to have yielded the desired outcome, hence the public outcry.
In this regard, it would be a great thing if the president would overhaul the security architecture and inject fresh blood that could better tackle the security challenges with renewed vigour.
As it stands, whatever action that can be taken to address the rising spate of insecurity across the country should be taken no matter how painful such decision could be.
