A former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Babangida Nguroje, has enumerated the socio-economic benefits of the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project in Taraba and commended moves by the Senate for its completion.
The Senate on Thursday mandated its standing committees on appropriation, power and finance to liaise with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, to integrate the $5.792bn Mambila Hydroelectric Power Project (MHEPP) as one of the “legacy projects in the “renewed hope” agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Senate also appealed to the President to include the project as one of his major “legacy projects” in the country.
The resolutions were sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator Manu Haruna (Taraba Central) and co-sponsored by a former governor of Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje; former Senate President, Ahmad Lawan and 26 other senators.
The project has been there for several years without take-off, following several issues including legal issues that trailed it.
Reacting to the development, the former deputy speaker said the motion was timely.
He maintained that if completed, the plant would be included in President Tinubu’s legacy projects and trigger local content beyond Kurmi and Sardauna Local Government Areas of Taraba State.
He stressed that the completion of the project would also improve the power crisis in Nigeria and create job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youths in the country.
Hon Nguroje who is also from the Mamabila said, “The project will create over 55,000 jobs, construction of resettlement homes for over 100,000 people, hauling and supplying of over 2.7 million tons of steel, production and supply of over 76 million tons of quarry stone and provide opportunity for cement manufacturing companies as well as auto-manufacturers in Nigeria.
“We commend the ingenuity of the 10th Senate as well as the North East governors to bring back the conversation at this time with the favourable disposition of the current administration of President Bola Ahmad Tinubu.”
