“I made two statements about this as you would recall. Firstly, on the 9th of December last year and secondly on the 15th of January when I went with this group (National Democratic Movement) consisting of Atiku, Bafarawa, Sule Hamma and the rest of them [to the National Assembly],” he said while answering questions from journalists shortly after the meeting of the steering committee of the NDM in Abuja yesterday.

“I went there as a politician with the message that the constitution must be properly interpreted. And I believe I have been consistent [on that]. There is no problem of succession in the Nigerian constitution… So whatever other people do…I have played my own role as a politician,” he said, stressing that his concern about Nigeria has been demonstrated in his position so far.

Other members of the EEG that called on President Yar’adua to transmit a letter of medical vacation to the National Assembly include former President Shehu Shagari, former Head of the Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, former Vice President Alex Ekwueme and some retired Chief Justices of Nigeria, among others.

When pressed further on why he was not with the former leaders, Buhari said, “Where you see Shagari and Ekwueme and you don’t see Buhari, it is understandable.”
