A simple “How are you?” is greeted with, “I’m fan-tastic! Isn’t that better than, ‘I’m OK. I’m fine’?” This, coming from the guy whose hit single last year was titled “Amazing,” sums up his life rather well: raising three kids — Leni, 4, Henry, 3, and Johan, 2 — with wife Heidi Klum, the supermodel/host/executive producer of Project Runway. “When I met my wife, my whole life changed on a dime, really quickly and for the better,” the singer of Nigerian origins, says. “Four years later we have three kids, and I think that’s amazing — I almost can’t remember what it was like before they were here.”

How do you and your wife find time to be together?

We’re careful not to fill up the calendar with too many things that would distract us from each other. I’m extremely lucky in that my wife is the chief scheduler. I really love taking her to dinner and then to the movies. And then, you know, ahem, some alone time when we get home. If we can’t see a good movie, we’ll watch a movie in bed.

We’ve caught you eating lunch — what’s on the menu?

My wife just made me a wonderful salad, and I am eating yesterday’s pasta Bolognese, which, I have to tell you, was exceptional. And corn on the cob, also from last night.

So Heidi’s the cook and scheduler. What are your talents around the house?

I do change the odd lightbulb, and I fix the Internet when it goes down, because it’s something I am really good at. Packing is my pet hate. However, anything directly involved with the children — taking them to school, preparing meals for them — then both Heidi and I are very actively involved. I love singing to them before bed.

What’s your favorite part of the day?

Taking my daughter to school. Lately it’s been even better because our son Henry now goes to the same school. It’s a selfish response, because I get so much out of it, maybe because it conjures up memories from when I was going to school. I remember the first time Heidi and I dropped Leni off — she couldn’t wait to see the back of us. But I was a basket case for about three weeks. I still get choked up. If she doesn’t give me a hug and a kiss as she gets out of the car, I’m a mess.

How do you handle it when your kids push your buttons?

Those moments are little treasures disguised in the form of challenges. They are another opportunity for you to grow. Even if your child is being completely unreasonable, outrageous, and terribly annoying — and trust me, Henry is that guy. It’s ironic: I don’t want to admit it, but I see myself in him when I was his age. That helps me understand him better.
