Following protest by some ad-hoc officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos over alleged non-payment of allowances, the commission has said the Ad-Hoc staff, who were mostly members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), had no reason to abandon the electoral duty.
Spokesman of INEC in Lagos, Mr. Femi Akinbiyi, in a chat with Daily Trust, confirmed that the corps members were protesting when they got information that an unnamed politician was sharing money to some of their colleagues.
He however, denied knowledge of the politician and insisted the money was not from the commission.
Akinbiyi reiterated that the commission only paid allowances of corps members through bank transfer.
According to him, the only time the corps members were paid in cash was after the training when each participant was paid N4,500.
He said the commission had contacted the state coordinator of NYSC to intervene.
Daily Trust reports that, at the Lagos State Continuing Education Centre, venue of the Ikeja Local Government Collation Centre, the corps members were insisting they would not participate in the election until they received their allowances.
Some INEC officials were seen appealing to the corps members who remain adamant.
