The Surveyor General of the federation, Abduganiyu Adebomehin, has said that building collapse cases have become rampant because regulations are not strictly followed.
Speaking Thursday in Kano at a meeting with state surveyors general, Adebomehin said until guidelines and designs were followed as set out, Nigeria would continue to have cases of building collapse with its attending human and economic devastation.

“When we design, it has to be followed strictly and we have to checkmate quackery. Those who are in charge of regulation have to do their jobs right,” he said.
Adebomehin further said the impact of surveyors’ responsibility had “far-reaching implications on security and defence, economic and commercial activities, social services, infrastructure and environmental development, among others.”
He added that as heads of surveying and mapping agencies, there should be provision of holistic approaches that would inform firm decisions, good policies, effective planning and implementation of laudable projects and people-oriented programmes of governments.
“The time is apt for surveyors to take centre-stage on matters of national reconstruction and development so as to provide requisite geospatial data and information to our political leaders for the turnaround of the fortunes of this great country,” he said.
On boundary-related crises, the surveyor general urged communities involved to work with his office and the boundary commission to lay all the issues surrounding boundary demarcation to rest.
