The World Health Organization, WHO, will partner with the media to address the humanitarian crisis
in the insurgency-ravaged North East. This was disclosed by Solomon Woldetsadik, the WHO
Incident Manager, Health Emergency Programme for the North East at a parley with media
executives in Maiduguri on May 28, 2017. Mr. Woldetsadik said that the media’s crucial role in
setting the agenda of public discourse in the society necessitates such a strategic engagement.
Consequently, a strong partnership with the media would help build trust between the organization
and the communities in the North East. According to the WHO manager, the organization’s
collaboration with the media would address the humanitarian crisis by serving as a channel for
advocacy, behavioural and attitudinal changes in North East communities especially with regard to
hygiene and access to healthcare, disease prevention through timely public enlightenment campaigns
and general awareness creation. Mr. Woldetsadik also promised that the organization would strive
hard to empower the media by building the capacity of its personnel for better productivity.
