The World Health Organisation (WHO) has praised Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State for investing enormous resources to impact health personnel and healthcare delivery in the state.
The Human Resource specialist, Mr Sunday Okafor said Ayade has made unprecedented push towards the achievement of Universal Health Coverage by the employment of 1000 health workers and fixing of array of primary and secondary health facilities.
He spoke in a calabar at the ongoing screening of 1000 health workers for employment by the state government. He said “Any governor that does not have a large heart for his people would not take up such huge responsibility of engaging 1000 workers at one go.”
The WHO health expert said that the employment of such huge number of doctors, nurses, lab scientists and other categories of health workers will certainly improve health services in the state.
Meanwhile, the Primary Healthcare Development Agency headed by Dr Betta Edu has concluded interview and screening sessions in two senatorial districts of the state. It is believed that on completion of the final lap of the screening session in the north of the state, the final 1000 names of successful health workers will be announced.
Addressing the applicants and politicians against inducing agency staff and invigilators during the interview, Edu cautioned, “We must not put subjective interest over public interest. Let’s do what is right and abandon sentiments. Millions of lives are at stake here and you don’t want to have health workers kill our relatives everyday in the PHCs. Furthermore, Anyone who gives anybody a dime does so at their own detriment”.
