The devilish activities of Boko Haram terrorists and the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in recent times are worrisome. It requires a holistic and scientific solution by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
From December 2019 to January 2020, they have carried out a series of attacks on civilians and military personnel.
As Nigerians and the whole world were still shocked by the event of December 24, 2019 when the Boko Haram terrorists killed 11 Christian captives in Borno State and massacred four aid workers, the Reverend Lawan Andimi, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, was beheaded on Monday January 20, 2020.
The renewed onslaught of terrorists and sundry bandits in this country shows that our security agents are ineffective and not well equipped to eliminate insurgency. It is highly unfortunate.
Since this terrorist group started many years ago, it has continued to kill innocent Nigerians, and it appears the Federal Government has no solution to the barbaric act.
It is ungodly for any sane person to kill fellow human beings in the name of God.
Unfortunately, while all these are happening, the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Army, has continued to claim that Boko Haram has been defeated, whether technically or otherwise.
Commenting on the latest activities of the terrorists, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said “there’s a compelling need to recalibrate our security architecture.’’
The chief executive of the Christian Solidarity, Worldwide, Mervyn Thomas also said, “The resurgence of both factions of Boko Haram is emblematic of the increasing insecurity in the country, and Nigerian civilians are at the receiving end. In view of the multiplicity of armed non-state actors currently operating in Nigeria, rising levels of insecurity throughout the country constitute a threat to sustainable investment and development.’’
Furthermore, according to a statement from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), “The Church views the unabated kidnappings, extortions and killings of Christians and innocent Nigerians as shameful. It is reprehensible and saddening that each time the government comes out to claim the defeat of the insurgency, more killings are committed. We are almost losing hope in government’s ability to protect Nigerians.”
The Federal Government should, as a matter of urgency, look for a lasting solution this problem.
